Advocacy

Compass IL is here to provide individualized support so you can acquire the skills necessary for self-advocacy. In addition, we advocate at community, state, and federal levels for system change resulting in new legislation, expanded benefits and services, as well as improved community service areas. Interested in getting involved in change advocacy yourself? Get the training you need from Compass IL.

Peer Support

Benefit from one-to-one peer support from trained volunteers and Compass IL staff members who have personally experienced a disability and are willing to talk about their life experiences. They’ll share Information, assistance, and support with anyone who is dealing with issues related to their disability.

Independent Living Skills

Compass IL can help you assess and develop the skills you need in order to live independently. Skill areas may include communication, financial management, household management, accessing community services, problem-solving and identifying, and using adaptive/non-adaptive equipment.

Information/Referral

Count on Compass IL to be your source for critical information on a variety of disability-related subjects and resources, including referral details for community services. Access our library of books, catalogs, and periodicals relating to disabilities. Stay up to date with our helpful quarterly newsletter called The Advocate.

Transition (youth, nursing home, etc)

We can facilitate the transition of individuals with significant disabilities from nursing homes and other institutions to home and community-based residences, with the requisite supports and services. Additionally, Compass IL provides assistance to individuals with significant disabilities who are at risk of entering institutions, ensuring they can remain within the community. We also facilitate the transition of youth who are individuals with significant disabilities, who were eligible for individualized education programs under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and who have completed their secondary education (or otherwise left school) to post-secondary life.

Benefits Analysis/PASS (Plan for Achieving Self-Support)

Meet with a one of our benefits specialists to discuss your current benefits situation, how employment may affect it, and the various options you may choose to employ once you begin your new job. Your specialist also can work with you to develop an individualized PASS plan, explaining all plan opportunities plus helping with the writing and submission of the plan.

ADA Implementation and Assessment

Compass IL can help your business or organization understand how to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), including assistance with self-evaluation and the development of an implementation plan.

Home Modifications and Accessibility

If you’re looking to increase your home’s accessibility, Compass IL can assist in identifying areas improvement and offer possible solutions, such as a ramp design, building information, or suggestions on how to remodel a bathroom for better access. We’re also a great source of funding resources for these types of projects.

Device Loan and Demonstration Program

Not sure if a particular device is right for you? Compass IL has over 2,000 pieces of assistive technology available for short-term trials. That means you can try out a piece of equipment and determine whether it meets your needs before investing in it. We can also show you where to acquire your equipment and if any potential funding options may be available.

WisLoan/TEPP/Telework

Compass IL can assist you with the following loan and purchase programs. The WisLoan program offers loans for assistive technology, such as hearing aids, modified, vehicles, wheelchairs, etc. The Telecommunications Equipment Purchase Program (TEPP) helps people with disabilities purchase specialized telephone equipment. The Telework program is a statewide, alternative loan program allowing residents with disabilities to purchase computers and other equipment.

Independent Living Assessment/Independent Living Skills Assessment

To assist individuals seeking to stay independent in their homes, an Independent Living Assessment is used to establish the skills and knowledge they need to direct their life at home and within the community. Next, an Independent Living Skills Assessment will help identify your independent living skill strengths along with areas needing improvement. During this in-home assessment, you’ll be asked to perform hands-on tasks, use adaptive equipment, and demonstrate abilities in community living circumstances. A written report is provided.

Youth Services

Designed for disabled youths between the ages of 14 and 24, this service promotes self-awareness and esteem, helps participants develop empowerment skills, and encourages them to explore career options, including postsecondary education.

Community Education

Want to know more about disabilities and disability-related issues? Compass IL offers training and presentations on disability awareness, assistive technology, legislation, and independent living issues along with detailed information about the services we provide.

Communication

Look to Compass IL to provide information, resources, and access to assistive technology, explain available options, and demonstrate equipment. Assistance with TEPP, TAP, and other funding program applications is also available.

Computer Assessment/Training

This hands-on approach to trying out the computer and adaptive equipment generally takes 2-3 hours and concludes with a comprehensive report. Compass IL also provides short-term training in the use of adaptive computer software and hardware, including potential installation of software and/or hardware.
